In Focus: Felix Nadar

Felix Nadar (Gaspard-Félix Tournachon – 6 April 1820, Paris – 23 March 1910), a French photographer who was one of the most creative, original and daring artists and entrepreneurs of the 19th century.

He was a Leonardo of photography, capturing the world from above in his own tethered balloon, and the catacombs and sewers of Paris from below, as possessor of a patent for artificial-light photography. He was a well-known journalist, novelist, and caricaturist before his photography studio brought him fame. An ardent republican, Nadar portrayed the greats of the era, and garnered gold medal after gold medal at the World’s Fairs.
